I’m going self-employed, what do I need to do?

First, you need to register as self-employed with HMRC. You will have to track your income and expenses up until the end of the current tax year. Then you’ll need to submit a self-assessment declaring everything you earned and everything you spent (in relation to your business). The tax you owe will be calculated for you.

What expenses can I claim?

Business expenses, whether self-employed or as a limited company, have to relate to the product or service you offer. This varies depending on the industry you’re in and there are limits to certain types of expenses
